Rehabilitation counseling
Walter Delson
Walter Delson is the founder and executive director of Everyday Abilities Foundation, a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Berkeley. He founded Everyday Abilities in 2014 to help people with disabilities overcome barriers imposed by their disabilities so they can live more independently and have a better quality of life. The work centers on rehabilitation counseling and clear information about assistive technology.
He sustained a spinal cord injury in a motorcycle accident in 1992, when he was 14, and is paraplegic. That experience shapes how he works: he can meet people with disabilities as someone who knows the territory, not as an outsider giving advice from a distance.
As an undergraduate he majored in philosophy. He earned a Master of Arts in rehabilitation counseling from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, in 2010, because he sees rehabilitation counseling as applied philosophy: philosophy asks how we live well, and rehabilitation counseling is one practical way to pursue that. Walter speaks English, Spanish, and German.
Sessions stay grounded in real life: work, school, health, relationships, and the everyday tasks that take more energy than they should. Walter is also deeply interested in technology, and in finding tools that actually increase independence and quality of life.
Sessions are available in person in the Bay Area, and beyond by phone or video call. To ask about rehabilitation counseling, email walter@everydayabilities.org or use the contact form on everydayabilities.org.
