PRC-Saltillo Genesis

A speech-generating device that can be used by touch, eye gaze, head tracking, or switches.

Computer access

PRC-Saltillo Genesis AAC speech-generating device: a black rugged tablet on a kickstand on a countertop, touchscreen showing a vocabulary grid with Good morning in the message window; no people in the photo.

What it is

Genesis is a new line of speech devices from PRC-Saltillo. It has a small second screen facing the listener so they can follow along, and several ways to access it for people who cannot use a touchscreen. It can also work as a computer for school, work, or controlling things at home.

Who it may help

People with complex communication needs, for example people living with ALS, cerebral palsy, or a brain injury.

Questions to ask your clinician

  • Which access method works best for me now, and later if things change?
  • Which vocabulary software fits how I communicate?
  • Can I try a device before the funding request goes in?

Paying for it

Speech and access devices are often covered by Medicare, Medi-Cal, or private insurance after an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist. If the device is mainly for work or school, the California Department of Rehabilitation or the school district may be another route.

Can I try one?
