BerkelBike

An outdoor recumbent trike you power with your arms and legs together. You can see one in person at our Equipment Library.

Library demo Fitness

BerkelBike Pro recumbent tricycle with arm cranks, leg pedals, a mesh recumbent seat, and three wheels.

What it is

The BerkelBike Pro links the hand cranks to the foot pedals, so arms and legs share the work, or you can pedal with your legs and steer with the grips. It can be set up with electric assist or with functional electrical stimulation (FES) so paralyzed legs can join in. BerkelBike also makes Connect, which attaches to your own wheelchair so you can ride without transferring.

Who it may help

People with partial or full paralysis of the legs, and others who want to ride outdoors and use as much of their own body as they can.

Questions to ask your clinician

  • Is FES cycling a good fit for me, and who could set it up?
  • Should I ride the recumbent version or the wheelchair attachment?
  • How should I build up time and distance safely?

Paying for it

Exercise equipment is less often covered by insurance. People sometimes find access through a rehab gym, an adaptive sports program, the VA, or a grant. If cost is the barrier, contact us and we can think it through with you.

Can I see one?

We keep one in our Equipment Library for in-person demos only. Use the form on that page if you want to schedule a demo.
